Request a Transcript and Review Academic Information

An official transcript is a comprehensive record of your academic progress, including transfer courses, credit earned by exam and earned degrees. Your name appears on your official transcript as it appears on your university record. Official transcripts include the university seal and signature of the registrar.

Student academic records are classified as confidential and may be released only with the student’s written authorization and signature, in accordance with the Public Information Act and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974.

Official transcripts cannot be released to students who have not met their financial obligations to the university.

Transcript Request Options

Transcripts may not be requested by phone or email (without a signed PDF Transcript Request form/transcript request information page attached) and are not issued to students who have not met their financial obligations to the university. All requests are generally processed within two (2) working days. There is no fee for official transcripts ordered utilizing options one (1) through four (4).

Additionally, transcripts requested using options one (1) through four (4) cannot be returned or issued by fax or email. For emailed PDF transcripts, see the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) option (5). NSC transcript services require a nominal fee for processing.

For current St. Edward’s University students and students who attended Summer 2008 forward, official transcript requests can be completed via the student myHilltop account. Search for Transcript Request and select the one with Banner in the subtitle field. This request requires access to your student account. If you no longer have your login and password information, you should use a different request option.

Use the PDF Transcript Request Form. Enter your information, print the form, include your signature and email the form to regr@yingla.net. Remember to sign your request before submitting. Electronic signatures are not accepted. The first page of the form has instructions for various shipping methods.

GPA and How to Calculate It

GPA (Grade Point Average) is used to express a student’s academic strength in a single numerical value. There are different types of GPA: cumulative, semester, major, etc.

Your semester GPA is an average of the grades you received in a given semester. Your cumulative GPA is an average of all the grades you’ve received in all of your courses at St. Edward’s University*. Major GPA is an average of the grades you received in all of the courses required in the major.

Each course is assigned a certain number of semester hours; those with a higher number of semester hours carry more value than those with a lower number of semester hours. In addition, each grade is assigned a certain number of points, with higher grades carrying more value than lower grades. Therefore, GPA is the calculated average of the corresponding numerical value of your grades.

*Note: Grades earned at institutions other than St. Edward’s University, Grades of Pass or No Pass, remedial/developmental course grades, and grades replaced by repeated course policies are not calculated into the cumulative grade point average.

The basic formula for calculating GPA is:

GPA = Total Grade Points divided by Total Semester Hours

  1. Multiply the credits for each course by the corresponding numerical grade point of the grade earned for each course. See the chart below for grades and their numerical values.

    Grade to Points Conversion
    GradePoints Per Semester Hour
    A+4.00
    A4.00
    A-3.67
    B+3.33
    B3.00
    B-2.67
    C+2.33
    C2.00
    D1.00
    F0.00
  2. Add the total grade points together.
  3. Add together the number of semester hours you earned.
  4. Divide the total grade points by the total number of semester hours, rounding to the nearest hundredth.

Imagine that you took four classes, each one counting for three semester hours, and received two A’s and two B’s.

To calculate your GPA, multiply the grade points by the semester hours:

4 grade points X 3 semester hours = 12

4 grade points X 3 semester hours = 12

3 grade points X 3 semester hours = 9

3 grade points X 3 semester hours = 9

Add up your total grade points. In this case, it would be 42.

Then divide 42 (total grade points) by the total number of semester hours, in this case, 12.

42/12 = 3.5

Therefore, 3.5 would be your GPA.

You can find your GPA on your unofficial transcripts. Go to myHilltop and click Self-Service Banner.  Click on Student, then Student Records and, finally, Academic Transcript. Choose your transcript level (Undergraduate, Graduate or All) and click Submit to load desired transcript. Scroll to the end of the transcript to view Overall (Cumulative) GPA.

You can also find your GPA on your Degree Works audit. Go to myHilltop and click Degree Works. Scroll to the Degree Requirements section of the audit and view Overall (Cumulative) GPA. Major and minor GPA can be located in the heading of each requirement block as well.

CIP Code Information

The Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) provides a taxonomic scheme that supports the accurate tracking and reporting of fields of study and program completions activity. CIP was originally developed by the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) in 1980, with revisions occurring in 1985, 1990, 2000, 2010 and 2020. Information on the 1985, 1990, 2000 and 2010 CIP can be accessed on the resources page under the section heading Archive and Historical. On the 2020 CIP Website, you can view both the 2020 CIP and the 2010 CIP.
